The MCC is pleased to announce the appointment of Micky Brown as Program Coordinator. Please see below an introduction from Micky and more on him and his role with the MCC!

Hello! My name is Micky Brown, and I use the pronouns he/him and they/them interchangeably. I am very excited to introduce myself as the Program Coordinator for the UCSB MultiCultural Center. I completed my undergraduate degree in Asian American Studies here at UCSB, and I am so grateful to still have the opportunity to stay at this beautiful campus.

As the Program Coordinator, I will oversee the MultiCultural Center’s quarterly calendar of events, which includes both educational and community-building events. My goal is to find a balance between events that cover the struggles and systemic harms that impact marginalized communities with events that celebrate our communities, honor our various interconnected histories, and make space for joy and creative expression.

My guiding ethic is rather simple: I am committed to working towards social justice. To me, this means I am committed to dreaming of a world where we are all equal and liberated, where the land is given back to the Indigenous peoples of this continent, where reparations are paid, where there is disability justice, where all systemic inequalities and the institutions that create them are dismantled. Sometimes, the work I do at the MultiCultural Center does not feel like enough. Still, I earnestly hope that by bringing this ethic to the MCC’s educational programming, we can start to unlearn the harmful messages we have been taught throughout our lives and allow for a more radical, loving, and sustainable world vision to take root.

Feel free to stop by my office to talk about programming (or One Piece), and I hope to see you at our Winter 2024 events!

Fun fact: I love bird-watching with the Goleta Coast Audubon Society. My favorite birds are cedar waxwings.

Warmly,

Micky Brown
