Sara Villegas-Boykins
YMCA St. George Youth Center
This year, the MCC will collaborate with the St. George Youth Center to commemorate Dia de los Muertos through a community-based celebration for children and families. We aim to give the Isla Vista community the opportunity to celebrate the holiday through food, live music, lotería, and traditional activities such as making ofrendas and decorating sugar skulls. Sara Villegas-Boykins, UCSB postdoctoral fellow, will present the history and importance of Dia de los Muertos. Please join us as we come together as a community to celebrate Dia de los Muertos.

Cup of Culture
Mija
MCC Theater
Mija is a short film that delves into the lives of Doris Muñoz and Jacks Haupt, two talented young Mexican-American women navigating the complexities of pursuing their dreams while balancing the realities of family responsibilities and cultural expectations. As the daughters of undocumented immigrants, Doris and Jacks face unique challenges in the music industry, where they strive to make a name for themselves. This emotional and inspiring story captures the struggles and triumphs of these two trailblazers as they redefine success, honor their roots, and carve out their own paths in a world that often overlooks voices like theirs.

Exhibition: October 3-December 12
The MCC Fall 2024 Art Exhibition at UCSB is a dynamic showcase featuring student and community artists' powerful and transformative work. As a multipurpose center, the MCC Lounge is often a space to study, de-stress, and find peace. With healing as a goal of the MCC, art serves as a therapeutic medium, offering solace and a means of processing trauma and adversity. The pieces in this collection convey resilience, hope, and the transformative power of art to mend and uplift the human spirit. This theme emphasizes the role of creativity in personal and communal healing.
