Beginning with a short meditative and gratitude practice, Evolve Benton will explore with writers what they fear during the Covid-19 pandemic and how to use writing as a tool of calmness and empowerment. In this virtual writing workshop, we will write, share and build community.

Please join the UCSB Department of Chicana/o Studies and the MCC to analyze the impact of Covid-19 on Latinx communities in Los Angeles and the Central Coast.  Scholars, physicians, and community activists will discuss how the pandemic has disproportionately affected Chicanx/Latinx people and how they are organizing and responding to this multi-layered crisis.

Dr. David Hayes-Bautista is a Professor of Public Health and Medicine and Director of the Center for the Study of Latino Health and Culture at the School of Medicine at UCLA. Dr. Melissa Smith is the Director of Health Equity Initiatives at UC Santa Barbara. Alejandra Melgoza is a community organizer with Central Coast Alliance for a Sustainable Economy (CAUSE). Arcenio J. Lopez is the Executive Director of Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project (MICOP).

To uphold our weekly film screenings and discussions, we will be transforming our cup of culture series into a virtual setting. Every Wednesday, we will watch a Netflix documentary or movie as a collective and we will have a post-film discussion afterwards.

The fates of undocumented families are like a roller-coaster as the United States' immigration policies are transformed.

Kwame Onwuachi is an American-Nigerian chef based in Washington, D.C. He was a contestant on Top Chef in 2015. He has been recognized by Food & Wine magazine, Esquire magazine, and the James Beard Foundation as "Rising Star Chef of the year.” He shares his inspiring journey from his youth to his success in his new book, Notes from a Young Black Chef. Join us for an evening where Kwame shares his story with us, along with delicious Afro-Caribbean recipes and cooking tips and demo for curried beef and broccoli.

Ingredients – (amount)

  • Canola oil – (1 tablespoon)
  • Skirt Steak, diced – (1 lb)
  • Yellow onion, diced – (1 each)
  • Garlic, minced – (6 cloves)
  • Ginger, minced – (1 tablespoon)
  • Curry powder – (1 tablespoon)
  • Fish sauce – (1⁄2 tablespoon)
  • Jalapeño, sliced – (1 each)
  • Chicken stock – (1 cup)
  • Broccoli – (1 bunch)
  • Lime juice – (1 each)
  • Raw sugar – (1 tablespoon)
  • Cilantro to garnish
  • Salt to taste
