We are pleased to announce that Afiya Browne has recently stepped into the role of director, effective February 23, 2026.
Dear Colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that after a comprehensive selection process, Afiya Browne (she/they) has accepted the position of Director of the MultiCultural Center, effective February 23, 2026.
Afiya is a familiar and respected leader in our community, bringing more than a decade of professional experience at the MCC to this role. Since serving as Interim Director beginning in May 2024, she has provided steady, strategic leadership and a clear vision for the Center’s future. Her recent work, including the development of the MCC’s Holistic Safety Plan, reflects a deep commitment to healing justice, trauma-informed care, and meaningful cross-campus collaboration.
Afiya holds bachelor’s degrees in Sociology and Black Studies from UC Santa Barbara and is currently a PhD candidate at UC Irvine. Her combination of scholarly rigor and lived institutional experience positions her well to guide the MCC into its next chapter of impact and growth.
I extend sincere appreciation to the selection committee for their diligence and care throughout this process. I also want to thank the many students, faculty, and staff who participated and offered thoughtful feedback.
Please join me in congratulating Afiya on her appointment. We look forward to the continued strength, stability, and vision she will bring to the MultiCultural Center.
In Community,
Joaquin Becerra, PhD
