The MultiCultural Center will kick off the year with our 1st MCC Annual Kickoff! Versa-Style, a hip hop dance ensemble of young, committed, and conscientious artists from L.A., will amaze you with their highly energetic moves and even teach you some. Versa-Style aims to instill the roots, history, and social and political issues surrounding the art of our generation. Arrive early and get a free MCC T-shirt!

Sammilan: A Confluence of Indian Folk and Classical Music Maestro Shashank and Friends

MCC Theater

Maestro Shashank’s reposeful flute combines with the rustic and folksy flavor of traditional Rajasthani Folk music by the Manganiar vocalist Anwar Khan, known for his powerful vocalization of the Krishna geet; the sublime sounds of the sitar by Maestro Purbayan Chatterjee; and two virtuoso percussionists Patri Satish Kumar playing the mridangam and Firoze Khan Manganiar playing the dholak. This concert is unique in its integration of Indian cultures and traditions. Co-sponsored by Raagmala.

Samurai among Panthers: Richard Aoki, Asian American Activism, and the Black Panther Party

Diane Fujino discusses her new book on Richard Aoki, the most prominent non-Black in the Black Panther Party and a leader of the Third World strike and Asian American Movement of the 1960s. Professors Douglas Daniels and George Lipsitz provide commentary. Diane Fujino is professor and chair of the Department of Asian American Studies at UCSB. Her books include: Heartbeat of the Struggle on Yuri Kochiyama and Wicked Theory, Naked Practice on Fred Ho. Co-sponsored by the Asian American Studies Department; the Black Studies Department; and the Center for Black Studies Research.
