Ai Weiwei is China's most famous international artist and its most outspoken domestic critic. In response, Chinese authorities have shut down his blog, beat him up, bulldozed his newly built studio, and held him in secret detention This film is the inside story of a dissident for the digital age who inspires global audiences and blurs the boundaries of art and politics. The UCSB MultiCultural Center is back in town with an evening of energizing DJ grooves and a captivating performance by internationally recognized spoken word artist Mayda Del Valle. A proud native of the South Side of Chicago, she has appeared on Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam on HBO and was a contributing writer and original cast member of the Tony Award winning Def Poetry Jam on Broadway. She has appeared in Urban Latino, Latina Magazine, Mass Appeal, The Source, The New York Times and was named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of America’s Young Innovators in the Arts and Sciences. In May of 2009 she was invited to perform at the White House for President Obama and First Lady.

The Black Sheep Art Collective: From Chic to Sheep Averian Chee, Jeff Slim and Cy Wagoner

As members of the Black Sheep Art Collective, Avarian Chee (Diné), Jeff Slim (Diné), and Cy Wagoner (Diné) have promoted local talent through summer youth programs around the Navajo reservation with mural workshops and assembling art shows. Their work is filled with memories of stories read, heard, and experienced; stories of beauty and strength that come inspired by youth; and memories of childhood, authors, and father figures.
