The UCSB MultiCultural Center is back in town with an evening of energizing DJ grooves and a captivating performance by internationally recognized spoken word artist Mayda Del Valle. A proud native of the South Side of Chicago, she has appeared on Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam on HBO and was a contributing writer and original cast member of the Tony Award winning Def Poetry Jam on Broadway. She has appeared in Urban Latino, Latina Magazine, Mass Appeal, The Source, The New York Times and was named by Smithsonian Magazine as one of America’s Young Innovators in the Arts and Sciences. In May of 2009 she was invited to perform at the White House for President Obama and First Lady.

The Black Sheep Art Collective: From Chic to Sheep Averian Chee, Jeff Slim and Cy Wagoner

As members of the Black Sheep Art Collective, Avarian Chee (Diné), Jeff Slim (Diné), and Cy Wagoner (Diné) have promoted local talent through summer youth programs around the Navajo reservation with mural workshops and assembling art shows. Their work is filled with memories of stories read, heard, and experienced; stories of beauty and strength that come inspired by youth; and memories of childhood, authors, and father figures.

Asiatic Static: Asian American Rappers, Negotiating Race Oliver Wang

This conversation will look at how Asian American emcees have negotiated issues of race and authenticity over the last twenty-plus years. Wang will give a short history of Asian American hip-hop and discuss various strategies these rappers have pursued in regards to how they do (or do not) present racial identity through their music. Oliver Wang is Associate Professor of Sociology at CSU-Long Beach and writes on music and culture for NPR, the Los Angeles Times, and KCET's ArtBound.
