MCC Lounge

WEEK 3 OR 4

This project aims to engage with grief as both a non-linear and multidimensional process while demonstrating the sacred importance of giving yourself the space, time, and patience to grieve. This project will take the form of a multimedia art exhibit at the MCC Lounge.

Each spring quarter, the Jackson Social Justice Legacy Scholarship (JSJLS) program culminates with each intern developing their own Community Engagement Project (CEP). Through their individual CEPs, Jackson Interns apply the tools and skills they acquired throughout the program into their own individual projects, which are shaped by their own interests in community care and coalition-building. These CEPs aim to not only uplift, restore, and empower their communities, but also forge meaningful connections between the UCSB student body and the broader off-campus community. The events will occur during the weeks 4-10 at various locations. Check back with the MCC for updates.

WEEK 5

How is food used as a cultural love language? This workshop will focus on exploring how food is used as a way to connect with our cultures and ancestors on a deeper level. Food is a primary tool to restore and nourish our communities physically, mentally, and spiritually. It has an important role in sustaining individual families/communities but also collectively keeping political movements going. Participants will be able to construct their own ancestral altars. We encourage you to bring any sacred items/framed photos of whoever you may want to honor.

Mom

A film by Xun Sero

MCC Theater

As a Mexican Tzotzil I grew up between the sacrality both of Guadalupe Virgin and Mother Earth. As a son, I grew up among the derision of not having a father and blaming my mother for it. “Mom” is a dialogue between mother and son exploring their contradictions, knowing and recognizing each other, and reflecting on naturalized violence and its reproduction.

Documentary | Director: Xun Sero | Running time: 80 min. | Country: Mexico | Year: 2022 | Produced by: Terra Nostra Films
